Breath Test

Breath testing is a noninvasive diagnostic tool used to evaluate common digestive symptoms and identify conditions such as lactose intolerance, bacterial overgrowth, fructose malabsorption, and Helicobacter pylori infection. At North Shore Gastroenterology and Endoscopy Centers, we provide several advanced breath tests in Westlake and Brooklyn, OH, to help determine the underlying cause of bloating, abdominal discomfort, gas, changes in bowel habits, and unexplained digestive symptoms. These tests are safe, simple, and highly effective, allowing our gastroenterologists to diagnose digestive conditions accurately and guide appropriate treatment plans.

Types of Breath Tests

At North Shore Gastroenterology, we offer multiple breath tests to evaluate different digestive issues and intolerances:

Hydrogen Breath Tests

Hydrogen Breath Tests are used to detect lactose and fructose intolerance, as well as small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). During these tests, patients consume a specific sugar solution, and breath samples are collected to measure hydrogen and methane gases. Examples include the lactose hydrogen breath test and the fructose hydrogen breath test. Elevated gas levels indicate issues with digestion or bacterial fermentation in the intestines.

Urea Breath Test

Urea breath test or H. Pylori breath testing is a safe, noninvasive method for detecting an active Helicobacter pylori infection in the stomach or duodenum. H. pylori is a common bacterial infection that can cause chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers, abdominal discomfort, and, in some cases, increased risk of stomach cancer. The test measures carbon dioxide levels in the breath after ingesting a urea solution, allowing for quick and accurate diagnosis.

Each breath test provides valuable information without the need for invasive procedures, anesthesia, or significant preparation. Results help guide treatment for food intolerances, infections, and digestive symptoms.

When Breath Tests Are Recommended

Your gastroenterologist may recommend breath testing if you experience persistent bloating, cramping, excessive gas, diarrhea after eating certain foods, recurrent nausea, or unexplained abdominal discomfort. Breath tests are commonly ordered when lactose intolerance, fructose malabsorption, or bacterial overgrowth is suspected based on symptoms or medical history. The H. pylori breath test is recommended when evaluating chronic reflux symptoms, suspected ulcer disease, or unexplained abdominal pain.

Breath tests are also useful when stool studies and blood work do not provide clear answers, or when noninvasive testing is preferred before more advanced procedures such as endoscopy.

About the Procedure

Breath tests are simple and comfortable for patients. Depending on the test, you may be asked to avoid certain foods, medications, or supplements for a short period beforehand to ensure accurate results. During the test, you will breathe into a collection device at timed intervals after ingesting a specific solution. The collected samples are analyzed for gas levels or chemical changes that help identify digestive issues.

Most breath tests take between 30 minutes and three hours, depending on the type. There is no sedation, no recovery time, and you may resume normal activities immediately afterward. Test results are reviewed by your gastroenterologist, who will discuss findings and recommend appropriate next steps or treatments.
