Barrx™ Treatment for Barrett’s Esophagus
Barrx™ radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is an advanced endoscopic treatment used to remove precancerous tissue caused by Barrett’s esophagus. At North Shore Gastroenterology, our board certified gastroenterologists offer Barrx treatment in Westlake and Brooklyn, OH, for patients diagnosed with Barrett’s esophagus. This minimally invasive therapy targets abnormal esophageal lining before it progresses to more advanced disease, helping restore healthy tissue and reducing the long-term risk of esophageal cancer.
Conditions Treated with Barrx RFA
Barrett’s esophagus is a condition in which the normal lining of the esophagus changes to resemble intestinal tissue due to chronic exposure to stomach acid, bile, and digestive enzymes. This process, called intestinal metaplasia, is most commonly associated with GERD, especially in individuals who experience frequent or long-standing reflux symptoms. Although only a small percentage of GERD patients develop Barrett’s esophagus, the condition carries a risk of progressing into esophageal adenocarcinoma.
Routine monitoring and early intervention are essential. Patients with confirmed Barrett’s esophagus often undergo periodic endoscopies to screen for dysplasia (precancerous cell changes). Barrx™ RFA is recommended when precancerous changes are detected or when the gastroenterologist determines that removing abnormal tissue will reduce cancer risk and improve long-term esophageal health.
About the Barrx™ Procedure
At North Shore Gastroenterology, Barrx treatment is performed using a short, minimally invasive endoscopic procedure. You will be sedated to ensure comfort throughout the exam. Once sedated, your physician will guide a thin, flexible endoscope into the esophagus. This instrument is equipped with a specialized Barrx RFA device that delivers precise heat energy to the affected tissue. The energy gently removes the abnormal, precancerous lining of the esophagus while protecting the deeper, healthy layers beneath it.
Following removal of the diseased tissue, new, healthy tissue typically regenerates within eight weeks. The procedure itself takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes; however, you should plan to be at the facility for up to two hours to allow time for preparation, sedation, and recovery.
Because sedation is used, a responsible adult must accompany you and drive you home after the procedure.
Benefits of Barrx™ RFA
Barrx™ radiofrequency ablation offers several advantages for treating Barrett’s esophagus, such as:
- Minimally invasive, outpatient procedure
- Low complication rates
- Targets only abnormal tissue, sparing healthy tissue
- Promotes regeneration of normal esophageal lining
- Effective in reducing progression to high-grade dysplasia or cancer
- Little to no discomfort following the procedure
Most patients experience a temporary sore throat or mild chest discomfort, but recovery is generally quick. Your gastroenterologist will provide follow-up instructions, including acid suppression therapy and dietary modifications, to support healing.
