Pre-Op Instructions
At North Shore Gastroenterology, we want to ensure every patient is fully prepared before undergoing a procedure. Our pre-operative instructions help you understand how to get ready, what to expect, and how to stay safe before your upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, or other scheduled services. These guidelines apply to our Westlake and Brooklyn, OH, locations and should be reviewed carefully before your appointment. Your provider may also give you personalized instructions based on your medical history, medications, or specific procedure needs.
Upper Endoscopy (EGD)
Before your EGD, you must arrange transportation. Because sedation is used, you cannot drive yourself home, and you will not be discharged unless your driver is physically present at the facility for the entirety of your appointment. Plan for the visit to last several hours.
Discuss all medications with your healthcare provider, especially blood thinners or anti-thrombin inhibitors. Inform your gastroenterologist if you are pregnant, have heart, lung, or kidney disease, or have had a heart valve replacement. Diabetic patients may need to adjust insulin or oral medications the day before and the day of the procedure—contact your prescriber for guidance.
One day before your EGD:
- Read all instructions provided by North Shore Gastroenterology.
- Follow your normal diet.
- Stop eating 8 hours before the procedure.
- Stop drinking 4 hours before the procedure.
On the day of your EGD:
- Stop solid foods 8 hours before the exam.
- Take morning medications with 4 ounces of water up to 4 hours prior.
- Bring a complete list of all current medications, including OTC items.
Colonoscopy
Please notify our office if you take blood-thinning medications or are diabetic.
Before a colonoscopy, you must complete a bowel preparation to fully empty the colon. Your doctor will provide detailed prep instructions and will review whether any medications should be adjusted or stopped beforehand.
Most patients will follow a clear liquid diet the day prior to the procedure. Clear liquids are drinks you can see through—avoid red or purple liquids. Clear liquids may be consumed until 4 hours before your arrival time.
Because sedation is required, you must arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home after the colonoscopy. You will not be permitted to leave the facility alone.
