Medtronic Bowel Control Therapy

Medtronic Bowel Control Therapy, delivered through the InterStim™ system, is an advanced treatment option for individuals living with chronic fecal incontinence. At North Shore Gastroenterology, our specialists provide this therapy in Westlake and Brooklyn, OH, to help patients regain bowel control when conservative treatments such as dietary changes, pelvic floor therapy, and medication are no longer effective. By targeting the nerves that regulate bowel function, the InterStim™ system helps restore communication between the brain and the bowels, allowing patients to experience fewer accidents and improved quality of life.

A doctor performs a manual abdominal palpation on a patient during a clinical exam to diagnose digestive issues or pelvic pain.

Why Medtronic Bowel Control Therapy Is Used

Chronic fecal incontinence occurs when the muscles and nerves that control bowel movements do not function properly, leading to unexpected leakage of stool. For some individuals, episodes may occur only during illness or diarrhea, while others experience persistent or recurring symptoms that significantly affect daily activities. When causes such as nerve injury, pelvic floor dysfunction, rectal disease, or long-standing constipation contribute to the condition, traditional treatments may not provide enough relief.

Medtronic Bowel Control Therapy is recommended when symptoms persist despite lifestyle modification or medical therapy. The treatment is clinically proven to reduce or stop fecal accidents by improving the communication pathways between the brain and the nerves responsible for bowel control. One unique advantage of this therapy is the ability to undergo a temporary evaluation phase, allowing patients to determine whether the therapy works for them before committing to long-term implantation.

About the Therapy

The InterStim™ system works by sending gentle electrical stimulation to the sacral nerves—the nerves that play a key role in bowel function. These nerves help control sensation, anal sphincter contractions, and the coordination of bowel movements. When these signals are disrupted, fecal incontinence may occur. InterStim™ helps regulate these nerve pathways, supporting more predictable bowel control.

Treatment begins with a short assessment period in which a temporary lead is placed near the sacral nerves. This lead is connected to a small external device that delivers stimulation over several days. During this trial phase, patients track their symptoms to determine whether the therapy significantly reduces accidents. If substantial improvement is noted, a small implantable device is placed during a minor outpatient procedure.

The full implant functions much like a pacemaker, providing continuous stimulation to help maintain normal bowel communication pathways. Most patients return home the same day and resume normal activities with minimal restrictions. Long-term clinical data shows meaningful and lasting improvement in symptoms for many individuals.

Benefits of InterStim™ Therapy

Medtronic Bowel Control Therapy offers several advantages, including:

  • Improved bowel control and fewer accidents
  • Clinically proven long-term symptom relief
  • Minimally invasive outpatient procedures
  • Adjustable therapy based on patient comfort and needs
  • A trial period that allows patients to confirm effectiveness before permanent implantation

Your gastroenterologist can determine whether InterStim™ therapy is appropriate based on your symptoms, medical history, and response to previous treatments.
